Roederer, I have a special bond with these wines after having spent a memorable couple of days at Roederer as a guest and being treated royally. Although Grand Marque Champagne is not what one might describe as artisan, there are many good things about Roederer. They are still family owned and independent, now run by the direct descendant of Louis Roederer, Frédéric Rouzaud. The production is relatively modest by Grand Marque standards at about 3 million bottles a year (dwarfed by the 33 million of Moet et Chandon) and the wine making is still in the hands of old cellar masters whose 'nose' and experience is passed down from generation to generation. There is a great deal of history here and it is always a treat and a pleasure to pop the cork on a bottle of Roederer. A blend of around 65% Pinot noir and 35% Chardonnay, 20% of which is wine matured in oak tuns, the Rosé Vintage cuvée is generally matured on the lees for 4 years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity. The wine has fruity aromas of wild red berries, followed by floral notes, and the sugary and spicy fragrance of zest; and the aromas of dried fruit and cocoa result from the wine’s vinifying in oak tuns. Rich and full-bodied, the Rosé Vintage exalts the maturity of the fruit. A sparkling wine with an initial impression of freshness, it opens smoothly with almost exotic notes, combined with the pure minerality of the Chardonnay grapes.
